Petinju legendaris Muhammad Ali meninggal setelah berjuang melawan penyakit Parkinson selama 32 tahun. Ali yang lahir tanggal 17 Januari 1942 meninggal dalam usia 74 tahun.

Petinju legendaris Muhammad Ali dikenal sebagai sosok yang mendominasi Olimpiade dan kompetisi tinju professional yang sangat dikagumi, sehingga majalah “Sports Illustrated” menyebutnya sebagai “Olahragawan Abad ke-20”.

Anak seorang pelukis di Lousiville, negara bagian Kentucky ini tertarik pada dunia tinju setelah orang-orang yang kerap mengejeknya di pemukiman tempat tinggalnya mencuri sepedanya. Pelatihnya mengatakan anak yang ketika itu dikenal sebagai Cassius Clay, tumbuh dengan campuran bakat dan tekad yang sangat kuat.

Pada 25 Februari tahun 1964 Ali secara mengejutkan mengalahkan Sonny Liston yang lebih difavoritkan, dan memenangkan gelar pertama juara tinju kelas berat. Ali kembali mengalahkan Liston dalam pertandingan kedua mereka, 25 Mei 1965.

Kolumnis olahraga suratkabar Washington Post, Mike Wise mengatakan Ali dengan meyakinkan terus mendominasi, bertarung dengan kedua kepalan dan kata-katanya.

“Ia mungkin orang pertama, atlet pertama di Amerika, yang membual tentang sesuatu dan membuktikannya dengan kemampuannya. Tidak seorang pun melakukan hal itu pada jaman tersebut,” ujar Wise.

“Saya yang terhebat. Saya mengalahkan semua penantang saya, dan jika anda mengaku terlalu pintar, saya akan merobohkan anda,” kata Ali yang ketika itu masih bernama Cassius Clay.

Clay semula ikut dalam kelompok Nation of Islam dan mengubah namanya kemudian dikagumi di seluruh dunia – Muhammad Ali. Tiga tahun kemudian, namanya diburuk-burukkan, karena menolak masuk dinas tentara Amerika dengan alasan agama dan menentang Perang Vietnam.

Ali diadili karena penolakannya itu dan gelarnya dicabut, sehingga ia tidak bisa mengikuti pertandingan apapun selama tiga tahun sampai Mahkamah Agung mengubah putusan terhadapnya tahun 1970.

Beberapa bulan setelah kembali ke ring tinju, juara tinju kelas berat yang baru Joe Frazier mengalahkan Ali dalam pertandingan profesional pertamanya. Tetapi Ali membalas kekalahan atas “Smokin’ Joe Frazier” itu dan memenangkan pertandingan kedua.

Pertandingan tinju klasik lainnya adalah ketika Ali melawan George Foreman. Ali dan Foreman melangsungkan pertandingan tinju tahun 1974 di Zaire, atau kini dikenal sebagai Republik Demokratik Kongo.

Pertandingan ini dijuluki sebagai ‘’Rumble in the Jungle’’ atau “Gemuruh di dalam Hutan”.

“Saya telah berkelahi melawan buaya. Saya bergumul dengan ikan paus, membelenggu petir dan memenjarakan guruh. Hebat, bukan? Minggu lalu saya membunuh cadas, melukai batu dan merumahsakitkan bata. Saya begitu sadis, saya membuat obat menjadi sakit. Saya kejam, dan cepat!”

"Orang masih ingat apa yang dilakukannya dulu, yang merupakan strategi yang luar biasa. Ia pura-pura capek, biarkan lawan memukulnya terlebih dulu sampai ia kehabisan tenaga, dan kemudian tiba-tiba bangkit dan mengalahkannya pada ronde ke delapan. Itu mungkin masih merupakan kemenangan paling luar biasa dalam sejarah tinju,” kata Mike Wise.

Ali bertanding melawan Frazier dalam pertandingan ketiga dan terakhir. Ini terjadi pada akhir tahun 1975 di Filipina, yang disebut sebagai “Thrilla in Manila”. Ali bertahan dalam 14 ronde dan muncul sebagai pemenang.

Pada tahun 1984 petinju legendaris itu didiagnosa terkena penyakit Parkinson. Ia tidak lagi bisa “terbang seperti kupu-kupu atau menyengat seperti lebah”, tetapi kemurahan hati dan semangatnya bagi kemanusiaan masih terus mengilhami orang di seluruh dunia.

“Muhammad Ali dicintai. Ada denyut jantungnya yang saya kira tidak akan pernah bisa disentuh siapa pun,” tambah Wise.

Dibenci atau dicintai, Ali membuat banyak orang sadar akan dirinya masing-masing. Dan selain kehebatannya dalam bertinju, mungkin itulah peninggalannya yang akan paling dikenang orang sepanjang masa. [em/ii]
