HORST: I’m Horst Eisenberger. Welcome to the Bronx Zoo. Have you visited the zoo, Mr. Learner?
MARTIN: Call me Martin. I have visited the zoo. I come with my family two or three years ago.
HORST: Do you want to see some of the animals?
MARTIN: Yes. We can walk and talk. When did you come to the Bronx zoo, Horst?
HORST: I come four years ago. I lived in Cincinnati. I worked at the zoo there. That was my first job.
MARTIN: Did you go to the university?
HORST: In Cincinnati? No, I didn’t. I’m from Kansas. I went to Kansas State University.
MARTIN: Where do you live?
HORST: I live on a farm in Connecticut.
MARTIN: Isn’t that far?
HORST: It’s not far from Bronx. My home is only a few minutes from here. I have to drive everyday.
MARTIN: Where are we now? I hear some animals, but I don’t see any.
HORST: The zoo is a very large park. You can’t see the animals all the time.
MARTIN: Do you have animals on your farm?
HORST: I have a few farm animals. It’s a very small farm. I have some sheep. And I have three horses.
MARTIN: Did you live on a farm in Kansas?
HORST: Yes, I did. My parents are farmers. They live on the farm now. But I didn’t like farming. I only liked the animals. I love animals.
MARTIN: What is that animal?
HORST: Which one?
MARTIN: The larger one.
HORST: That’s an oryx.
MARTIN: Pardon.
HORST: Oryx.
MARTIN: Spell it for me.
HORST: O-R-Y-X. It’s from Africa.
MARTIN: Are most of your animals from Africa?
HORST: They’re from everywhere.
MARTIN: How does someone become a zoo keeper?
HORST: There are many of us here at the zoo. I am a doctor. An animal doctor of course. I studied for many years at the university. Then I went to the zoo in Cincinnati. It’s a smaller zoo. Other people study other things. My wife studied animal behavior.
MARTIN: Does your wife work here at the Bronx zoo?
HORST: Yes, she does. And our daughter wants to work here.
MARTIN: How old is your daughter?
HORST: She’s ten years old. Children love animals.
MARTIN: There are many children here today.
HORST: Yes. Teachers bring their children from school.
